Birnbaum, Solomon

Birnbaum, Solomon
(1891-1990)
   British palaeog-rapher and Yiddish philologist of Austrian origin. He was born in Vienna. He lectured in Yiddish at Hamburg University from 1922 to 1933, when he emigrated to England. He taught Yiddish and Hebrew palaeography at the London School of Oriental Studies and the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. He wrote for Yiddish newspapers and journals and published works on Yiddish grammar. His major work is in the field of palaeography.
